Chileans face aftermath together.

After a 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile in late February, The people of Chile, along with volunteers, are facing the huge impact of the natural disaster which left miles of Chile in rubble. Said to be one of the most serious disasters since 1900, and stronger than the earthquake that hit Haiti.

Together, people are helping to clean up the mess left behind. What used to be homes, supermarkets, playgrounds lay in heaps of rubbish on the ground. Devistation tinges the smoky air.
Throughout this disaster people helped eachother and cared for themselves.

Teen Issue Interview

I am currently working on a Teen Issue Feature about texting and typing injuries in teens. I interviewed a fellow classmate, Ashley Steele, age 17, about her current diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel.
This is the transcript of that interview:

How did you find out you were injured?

Ashley Steele: When I first realized something was wrong in my hand/wrist, I was in the middle of typing an essay. I felt a dull, numbing type of pain throughout my forearm and wrist. I brushed it off at first, but a few days after, I noticed that my palm was black and blue, and I couldn't move my wrist at all. It really set me off and I know that I had to get it checked out. And sure enough, my doctor told me I had a case of mild Carpal Tunnel.

Do you have Carpal Tunnel because of texting?

AS: No, I don't have Carpal just because of texting. It's more like a combination of texting, typing on the computer and overuse (because I'm a lefty). But, texting certainly contributed to my injury.

Do you think you text too much?

AS: Well like every other teenager in the world, I text all day everyday. Do I text too much? Maybe to older generations, but for a teen, I don't feel I text too much. It's a way to keep in contact with all of my friends, family, etc. It's a way of life, pretty much.

How many texts do you send a day?

AS: I send about 50-100 messages daily via text messaging. I send to my mom, my grandma in Florida, and at least five friends daily.
Additional notes.

AS: We live in a society in which technology is everything from computers, to cell phones, to touch screens at the banks. Everything we do is related to technology. Using the computer and texting is a way of life, and it isn't going away anytime soon. I think if we are more careful with how we use our technology, injuries can be avoided.

Twilight Saga: depression epidemic?

Depression in teens is not uncommon, infact, about 20 percent of teens will experience some form of depression in their adolescence. But, is it possible to be depressed by a book series? A rising number of stories of teen boys and girls feeling depressed, hopeless, and even experiencing suicidal thoughts have been noted by devoted fans of the Twilight saga, a story of vampires, warewolves, and lust.
A 14 year old Twilight fan blogged, "After reading Twilight it feels like my life is missing something and I never realized it before- true love. I'm only 14 so I know there's plenty of time for me to find love but I know it won't even compare to the love Edward and Bella have." Another fan suggested she seek out counceling for her worsening depression.
Teens who haven't read the books are watching the movies. Twilight, the first movie and New Moon, the second one have both broken records in total gross earnings. Eclipse, the third movie comes out in theatures June 30, 2010, which raises the question: How far will this go?
Whether or not this is just a phase, Twilight has a huge impact on many teens' lives.

Superbowl: before the game.

Sports fan or not, we all know it: the Super Bowl is the most popular American football game of the year. In order for it to live up to its grandeur more blood, sweat, and tears are put into it's making than you think, but perhaps not by who you think. Before the game commences, there is the Super Bowl ground crew: calloused finger tips, sod-paint laden tee shirts, and all to make it possible. They have the dirty job, they put down the sod for the game, paint the field lines, and set up the goal posts.

These people don't build much of a fan base, but their part is vital to the Super Bowl. The next time you're watching a professional sports game, watching the field, realise the time, effort, and care it took for the field to be suitable for a game, or the bright team colors airbrushed onto the sod. They didn't get there themselves!
